Generally you need to use some common sense when shopping from home, this includes home shopping by telephone, mail order, fax and digital television as well as the internet. Some things to watch out for are;
- The possibility of poor after sales service, particularly if the company is online only or has no retail premises in your area.
- Some people find the abundance of information on the internet too much and too confusing. There will always be a need for a good local knowledgable store.
- Information can be out of date, so if you are using information for a purchase and particularly for a service, for example travel times or insurance quotes, always make sure they are up to date.
- You may want avoid purchasing from websites which require your email address and telephone number as mandatory fields, although use your judgement as there may be a good reason for this. You should have the opportunity to select a box of some sort which states whether or not you want the company or its 'carefully selected other companies' to send you lots of information and offers, you know the ones.
- Most home shopping sites now give you information on the security of your personal details and credit or debit card details.
- Take extra care when shoping from home using online auctions. Unlike other retailers and sellers, auctioneers can refuse to accept responsibility for the quality of goods. Check the Terms and Conditions carefully. The standard terms and conditions outlined in the Unfair Terms in Consumer Regulations 1999 still apply unless the seller is a private individual.
If you are shopping from home for goods or services you now have new consumer rights covering you on almost all types of home shopping purchases. However, these new rules do have some exceptions for example financial services, the sale and purchase of land and of particular note, auctions. Also, deliveries of food or beverages, accommodation and catering/leisure services are also excluded from parts of the new regulations. The main points covering purchasing from home are;

- Written Confirmation
- A Cooling Off Period (different for food and beverages purchased)
- Payment Protection
Also whether you are shopping from home for specific items or just browsing keep your guard up against online shopping internet scams. Although some seem too outrageous to fall for they have a frightening success rate. In partiular sites that have money making clubs, online homeworking schemes, seemingly miraculous home shopping health and beauty products and business scams from abroad.
When using any site either direct home shopping or using a home shopping network or home shopping channel there are a few things to look out for regarding the supplier
Avoid any home shopping tv or online companies who only provide an email address or post office box number and are vague about their actual location.
Companies who use 'This is not a Scam' as a main part of their advertising. A genuine company would not feel the need to convince you of their legality. Other wording on adverts to be wary of are things that 'Guarantee success', will make you a six figure income or sites which offer to sell you some secret money making method, claiming they are only offering this to 'a select number of people'
Think honestly about any claims made by direct home shopping sites. For example 'Thousands of satisfied customers'. Even testimonies with names attached can easily be made up and you generally can't check them out.
